Joyclyn Faust’s 20th Anniversary Interview

Joyclyn Faust’s 20th Anniversary Interview

Today Joyclyn Faust, Senior Media Director / Broadcast and Convergence Manager, celebrates her 20th Anniversary at Harmelin Media.  We sat down with her recently as we continue our Anniversary Interview Series to get her take on the industry and get to know her better.

What are some of the notable changes you have seen in the industry since you started at Harmelin?

There have been so many changes over the years! I remember sending orders via the fax machine and waiting for the (hard copy) November Nielsen book to come out so I could finally see how well I did in projecting all the new fall shows.  I knew I had ‘arrived’ when I received my own copy of a Philadelphia Nielsen book!  I also remember all our local TV and radio stations had to come to our offices to pick up their commercials…. Friday afternoons were very busy in our lobby!

The way we consume media has changed so much, it would take our full interview to go over all it.  Not only can we watch TV programs any time we want (without needing a VCR), we can watch them from our phones and computers.  Digital was not really a consideration and cell phones weren’t smart!

As many changes as there have been over the years, one of the things that has not changed: people are still watching TV!  Whether it is viewed live, same day, VOD or from a connected device people are still watching it (and tweeting about it) and it provides the potential for great reach.

What has been your greatest success at Harmelin?

Wow, I honestly do not know how to answer this one.  I love saving money for our clients – when I can put together a good quality schedule and save some money, I am pretty happy about it.  I also love it when my TV campaigns post.

Where do you see the industry in the next one year, five years, 10 years?

There will be something new … maybe virtual reality will have really taken off in the next 5-10 years.  Wherever the industry is going, we must be ready for it and even be a few steps ahead of it!  I do think within the next few years, we will be using data much more to define and reach our targets. I also think OTT (over the top) will have grown immensely. Of course, secretly I want everyone to stay home and watch live linear TV a lot more often than anyone is doing now.

What is the most unique trip you have ever taken?

Not sure if it’s unique, but my daughter’s travel softball had a summer tournament in Florida. We, along with two other softball families, rented a van and a house in Florida.  We drove straight through, only stopping for gas, food, and restroom breaks. It was a great adventure that I will never forgot. And hot, it was also very hot! Luckily, our house had an indoor pool. Oh, and I got to watch a lot of softball.

Fun tidbit /something no one would guess about you?

I was really involved in the theater in junior and senior high school. I even won a Tony award for best actress (our teacher’s name was Tony) and was an officer in our drama club.

What is your favorite song, movie or TV show and why?

I am not sure I have a favorite song but two of my all-time favorite groups are Bon Jovi and Duran Duran. I like 80’s movies – if I come across The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I am not touching the remote. Like picking a favorite song, asking for a favorite TV show is tough. I like comedies – Seinfeld, Friends and The Office still make me laugh. The Goldbergs is probably my favorite current comedy and This Is Us gets my vote for best new show of the season. And Stranger Things on Netflix is totally worth the binge!

Joyclyn’s impact at Harmelin is evident in how her colleagues speak about their experiences working with her.  Brendan Murtha, Media Strategist/Sports Analyst, commented, “Well I couldn’t ask for a better supervisor.
